THE SECRETS BEHIND THE PERFECT IRONING JOB

From the desk of Wayne Edelman, the President of Meurice NYC, we are sharing his quick tips for a perfect ironing.

At Meurice, the perfect ironing job can turn a slouchy button-down into a crisp, suave look. How can such a simple task elevate a garment? Let’s talk about the secrets behind ironing. Consider the following before ironing any piece:

Wash your garments before ironing.

Clothes are definitely best ironed after they’ve been washed. You don’t want to iron dirt into clothes – especially if there are stains – ironing stains can set them into the clothes, ruining the integrity of the textile and making them much harder to get out.

Each garment demands different temperatures.

If it can be ironed, certain fabrics require different temperatures. The labels will have irons with one, two or three dots in them – this means low (~230º), medium (~300º) or high (~390º) heat respectively. Or, it’ll have an iron with an “x” through it. You can guess what that means. We actually have a guide on the care label if you want to read more.

Care labels are the answer to your ironing questions.

We live by the care label. Be sure to check the care label to see what the recommended ironing settings are.

Here is your quick guide on ironing garments at home:

Step-by-Step for Ironing

  1. Set up your iron, ironing board, and garment, and start with the lowest-temperature first.

  2. Let iron heat up.

  3. Unbutton garments, and place lengthwise on the board.

  4. Iron down the length of the garment in straight lines, steaming when needed.

  5. Move and adjust carefully to move on to other areas, make sure you’re not accidentally folding the garment or bunching it.

  6. Iron large areas then move on to sleeves and collars.

  7. Hang up immediately.

  8. Call Meurice if something goes wrong, and we’ll help you out.
